Have you tried checking out Mythras, Riddle of Steel, or Honour + Intrigue, all three which do dueling differently?
Actually, I have not heard of those three! Thanks for the recommendation, I’m going to see what those may have to say on how to handle it. Honor + Intrigue sounds exactly like what I’m looking for as well. You’d think with the popularity of swashbuckling types there’d be a bit more on the matter.
My main draw in adventure games is the ease to hack up my own stuff for it. It’s why I love OD&D and Troika, I can play with their guts all day with maximum ease. This means I also prefer simpler, less idk, mechanistic(?)/”crunchy” games. I like room to roam around. Though I am drawn a bit to a specific heavier than I’m used to game, SWADE.
I definitely have an unfortunate fixation with systems that promise something different within pre-existing structures, or a unique take on an existing genre/mechanic, but either during reading or running the game I realise that I am quite set in what I like, and no matter how much I try to expand, I like it for a reason.
Although, I think His Majesty the Worm might be the exception, as reading it made me more excited than I was when initially deciding to buy it, so here’s hoping!
