Legal Kimchi: You're Missing the Point of Dungeons

This is kind of speaking to the choir in our area of the game scene, but in this video Legal Kimchi goes over the history and development of dungeons in games, their influence, and uses.

He also references House of Leaves and Pathologic, so bonus points for that.

This indeed did not tell me anything I don’t already know, but it is good to tell it to people who don’t in fact know this.

Even then, I only learned this stuff in the past 5-6 years. Back when I was a teen in the early 2000s and getting into TTRPGs, the prevailing wisdom Bulgarian RPG scene was that nobody actually does dungeon crawling any more, because that’s just old stuff that is obsolete.

Except growing up also playing Infinity engine games, roguelikes and Diablo kind of showed me that, no, dungeon crawling absolutely slaps, and surely you can still do that in TTRPGs which is where it started.

I hope that video reaches people who would otherwise not think about it.

My takeaway from this video is that dungeons are point crawls, but spooky
